Windows-only for time being

A new jailbreaking tool has been released for iOS devices, dubbed Limera1n. The software is capable of jailbreaking most devices running iOS 4.0 or later, including the iPad, the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, and the third- and fourth-generation iPod touch. The Apple TV is also "technically supported," though there no apps available for it, whether officially sanctioned or otherwise.

The jailbreak is still in beta, and while allowing handhelds to operate untethered, still has some important limitations. It is first of all Windows-only; a Mac version is said to be "coming soon." Installation also isn't a one-click process, though this is described as a necessary tradeoff. Instructions are included with the download.

    Caution

I've seen reports of bricking around the net from using this, and the dev has a general rep of putting out very buggy 1.0 releases. Govern yourselves accordingly.

Woking great on iPad iOS 3.2.2

My iPad is synched to a Macbook Pro for regular day to day use. I also have a Windows PC for use when required; Limera1n was such a reason to use the PC. I backed up my SHSH Blobs using Tiny Umbrella, and then ran a full backup in iTunes before the Jailbreak attempt. The Jailbreak took all of a few minutes from start to finish. I have since loaded Cydia and several special apps, the best ones: Backgrounder (allows running more than 1 app), and MyFi 4.0 which allows iPad to Macbook internet tethering. Yesterday I was downloading my Mac email and websites at over 1MB/s via the tether. MyFi 4.0 is free to try, and $20 to keep. You can keep using the free version if you go into your iPad and self-adjust the Date and Time to keep the MyFi date checker from timing out on the trial. Your results might vary.
