Beatles discography goes on sale at iTunes Store

Completes long-standing struggle

After years of waiting, Apple has finally secured the rights to the Beatles discography for the iTunes Store. All of the band's major studio albums are present, such as Revolver, Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road. Also present are three compilation albums, and a comprehensive box set, which costs $149.

The artist page on iTunes currently features two videos, including the Beatles' first-ever US concert at the Washington Coliseum. The albums themselves are rendered in Apple's iTunes LP format, which incorporates photos, notes and mini-documentaries. As a result they cost an average of $13, as compared to the price of most iTunes albums, typically just $10.

Apple has had long-standing problems in obtaining the Beatles' music. Issues were most recently blamed on record labels, including EMI, and even Apple Corps, originally founded by the Beatles themselves. Current Apple Corps head Jeff Jones is said to be friendlier to digital than his predecessor, having overseen the first digital sales of the Beatles' music, and the porting of songs into The Beatles: Rock Band for game consoles.

    Yes it does...

iTunes LP supposedly has artwork, lyrics, etc.

Still, they're not using Apple Lossless sampling. Although, I did notice that VBR (variable bit rate) ripping in iTunes X has been bumped to 330 from 256. It's a step at least.

    The day I'll never forget.

Just imagine, 40 years from now. "Grandpa! Grandpa! Tell us again the story of where you were the day the Beatles came out on iTunes!! Tell us again!!!"

Apple has hit an unprecedented level of unnecessary hype with this one... impressive.

    Beatles...Meh

And to think we were expecting REAL news, not just an update to the iTunes catalog. While the Beatles are popular, they did not warrant the "...Remember this day forever..." hyperbole.

So Apple, when will we get the iTunes equivilant of the the Zune Subscription service? I know MANY folks who would be will to basically pay $15.00 a month to buy 10 songs and also be able to stream or download ANY music in the iTunes libary.

If MS can pull it off, why can't Apple?

Seriously, who cares anymore? Youngen's won't appreciate it. And old-timers already have it, probably 5 times over.

and a zillion $$ advertising campaign

Apple already put together multiple television commercials to advertise this too. Big whoop.

I could just hear Steve when they struck this deal, "SCORE!"
I guess he can move on with his life now after accomplishing his life's dream
