Early attempt at high-end gaming engine for iOS

Rage: Mutant Bash TV has been approved by Apple, and should appear at the App Store tomorrow, says id Software co-founder John Carmack. The game is based on the larger upcoming Rage title for PCs and consoles, a first-person action game with role-playing and racing elements. Mutant Bash has been described by Carmack as a "little slice" of its bigger cousin, though few details have been made public.

The game may be more significant for its underlying 3D engine, which can run as fast as 60fps on current iOS devices despite having graphics far in advance of most titles at the App Store. Two versions of Mutant Bash should be released on Thursday: one with high-resolution textures, for the iPad, iPhone 4 and fourth-generation iPod touch, is expected to cost $2. A low-resolution edition should cost just 99 cents.

id will beat long-time rival Epic to the punch in terms of having a genuine game for iOS. The latter has so far only published Citadel, an app demonstrating the Unreal engine. A game based on Citadel, Infinity Blade, is due sometime during the holiday season.
