Apple releases iOS 4.2.1 gold master to developers

iOS 4.2 being bypassed entirely?

Apple is seeding a new gold master of iOS to developers, v4.2.1, reports say. Although no notes have been leaked, one source claims that the firmware is aimed at fixing some serious issues with audio and Exchange support in iOS 4.2, which itself received an unusual second gold master distribution last Friday. Apple has yet to push v4.2 out to the public, and the existence of a v4.2.1 preview likely suggests that the former will not reach the general public.

The audio and Exchange problems are said to have been so serious that Apple asked for v4.2.1 testing to be completed by this weekend "no matter what." The source adds that a public release may only happen next week, which would represent yet another delay for the firmware. Apple has for months promised that iOS 4.2 would be released sometime in November.

c'mon already. I'm not one to get too worked up over software updates, but this situation is ridiculous. What's the deal? I feel like my iPad is stuck on OS 9 while my iPhone has been easily cranking along with OS X for months.

why not fix what needs to be fixed and call it 4.2?

    Why is this situation ridiculous?

Apple said "sometime in November" and we're only just barely past half-way through November.

The "promises" of a Tuesday/Friday/Monday release were pure speculation not perpetrated by Apple.

When November 30th rolls around and we don't have iOS 4.2.x on our iPads, then it's time to pull your hair out. For now, though, calm down. This situation isn't even remotely approaching "ridiculous" yet.

    Sheesh.

    Non-issue.

Is this really an issue? No.

4.2 released this month. 4.2.1 next month

Apple will release 4.2 and then follow up with 4.2.1. The bugs in 4.2 only affect VOIP apps so unless if you use those apps, you can use 4.2 on your device without any problem. Those who are relying on VOIP to work will have to wait.

    and ... it's 4.2.1

Did the iTunes 4.2 update for my iPod touch 4G and it now says it's version 4.2.1. So technically it IS 4.2, just not 4.2.0. Everyone's sort of right.
