TiVo iPad app due by end of January

The official TiVo iPad app should be at the App Store by the end of January, the company has announced via Twitter. Although not providing more details on the matter, it also adds that the prospect of Android and iPhone apps is being investigated. The iPad app will require a connection to the same network as a TiVo set-top.

Though primarily intended to handle DVR functions, the app will also serve other purposes. Users will for instance be able to browse program guides, or substitute an iPad for a TiVo's normal remote control. In that respect it may closely mirror Verizon's FiOS Mobile app.

    I want a nice simple app that I can set up recordings without having to navigate their damn website away from home. Video watching would be OK but not a requirement. Remote control has no interest at all, since who wants to grab their iPad/iPod/iPhone just to pause or switch shows.

    Only works with Tivo Premiere???

    Apparently this app only works with the newer "Premiere" models? That is very very disappointing. The Premiere offers no functional advantage over the older Series 3 HD models that a lot of us have, and there is really no compelling reason to upgrade. It can't be that hard to enable this on the Series 3 models.

    Given Tivo's incredible lack of innovation and progress since the intro of the Series 3, I am seriously contemplating a "forklift upgrade" of my Tivo to a Windows Media Center box.
    MUCH better connectivity, multi-stream cablecard support, streaming to MCEs like Xbox 360, and I can stuff my chassis with as many 2 TB drives as I want.

    what???

    Premiere only? That would suck. Though it would make sense. From all I've seen of the premiere 'interface', you would want to use an iPad or some other 'remote' to be able to do what you want, without having to deal with the UI clutter.
