iOS 4.3.3 update due within two weeks or less, says source

Security fixes combined with battery, iPod patches

Apple's promised short-term iOS security update is known as iOS 4.3.3, and should arrive in two weeks or less, a source with the company says. The person notes that as expected, it should reduce the size of the location cache, and prevent the file from being backed up to iTunes. The cache should be deleted entirely when Location Services are off.

The source adds that v4.3.3 will also make some battery life improvements, and an unspecified collection of bugfixes for iPod touches. Battery drain has been a recurring problem with iOS updates, potentially showing up after previously trouble-free firmware releases. The issue is frequently blamed on runaway processes consuming power when they aren't needed.

Unmentioned by the source is the "major" iOS update which Apple says will do on-device encryption of the location cache. If that upgrade is actually iOS 5, it could arrive as late as September. Apple could however potentially distribute an iOS 4.4 or 4.5 several months earlier.

    can't wait ...

I can't wait to hear all the complaining that's bound to happen once location data is restricted in size and people begin to notice delays in receiving information based on their location. This will especially be interesting when people turn location services off, then back on when they need it and their iPhone takes time to find where it is again.

I wish their was an option to op out of this (lack of) feature. I have no problem having Apple cache where cell towers are. I have nothing to hide.

    Tire of people complaining

This so call location service got blow out of proportion.
It is kind of funny that people worrying about approximately where are they has been.
You have to actual get hold of the other person iphone to get this info.
If I get your iphone, I sure do not want to know where you has been.
I would get other more sensitive info like phone number, bank account and stuff like that.
And if you are afraid that your SO know where you has been going then you deserve to get caught.

I don't see the problem here

If you want to leave location services on, then it is your choice.
The problem was, there WAS no choice.

Why is this bad for you folks that don't care about it? What possible skin off your nose is it?

    Baffling.
