Apple reviving expired MobileMe logins for iCloud transition

Apple is resurrecting expired MobileMe accounts in the transition to iCloud, notes 9to5Mac. Under the current arrangement, old MobileMe username and password combinations can be used as iCloud Apple IDs. The option only works, though, if a person has iOS 5, OS X Lion and the iCloud beta client.
With that software installed old accounts should be able to access all iCloud functions in Lion or iOS. The accounts are stuck in a kind of limbo regarding MobileMe, though, as they can't be used to access most web apps at me.com, like Mail or Calendar. Only Find My iPhone is said to be the exception.
Still a matter of debate is whether or not Apple is working on any iCloud web apps. While some evidence has been found to support the notion, Apple doesn't appear to be hiring for new web apps. During the company's WWDC 2011 keynote, it made no mention of plans for a web interface.

Does anyone know if the resurrection applies to original .mac accounts that were never transferred to mobilme?
