Fifth-gen iPod touch to include 3G support, rumor claims

Competition with iPhone casts doubts

The fifth-generation iPod touch will incorporate 3G compatibility, sources for a Dutch report insist. To make use of the feature, owners would have to insert a SIM card associated with a particular 3G provider. The addition would solve one of the Touch's biggest limitations, which is the ability to access the Internet beyond Wi-Fi range.

AppleSpot expects the new Touch to launch in September alongside a new iPhone. The prospect of 3G on iPods is unlikely though, as it might eliminate much of the incentive to buy an iPhone outside of features like GPS and a better camera. Conversely Apple could simply equip Touches with a slower cellular connection, but this would still allow people to bypass carrier voice fees associated with the iPhone by using VoIP apps like Skype.

    Makes no sense.

    If you want data for your iPod touch, you'll need to sign up for a plan, so why not just sign up for a 3 year plan and get an iPhone ($169) for $60 cheaper than an iPod touch ($229)?

    Maybe if it doesn't require a contract

    If a 3G iPod Touch doesn't require a contract -- pay as you go, like the iPads -- then it might be preferable for those who just need occasional access.

    What is the problem

    @hayesk

    Because many folks might not need a huge data plan, nor might they need the minutes, or text messaging. They may want a iPod Touch to act as does the iPad. It would make a nice device for those who don't want to lock themselves into a 2 year contract...and for those who cannot pass the credit check.
