Lists 8GB Nanos as 'discontinued'

Retailers are beginning to offer substantial discounts on iPods, including the flagship iPod touch, site checks and tips to MacNN show. Of special interest is OfficeMax, which is running a clearance event for Nanos and Touches with discounts up to 34 percent. Stock is limited; the only Touch listed on the OfficeMax website, a 32GB model, is available in-store only, and all items are marked as selling "while supplies last." Two 8GB Nanos are listed as "discontinued," even though Apple itself is continuing to sell them. Some of the lower prices are only applicable online.

Best Buy has put all of its current-generation iPod stock "on sale," with discounts ranging between $3 to $35 depending on the player. Similar prices are in effect at Fry's.

The OfficeMax sale in particular suggests that an iPod refresh is imminent. Some sort of Apple announcement is expected in September or October, likely alongside the introduction of new iPhones. The company's iPod plans have remained largely unleaked, though the company may introduce a white Touch option, keeping the overall layout of the player intact. Internal changes might include a better camera, a switch to the A5 processor and up to 128GB of storage, though these are mostly speculation based on Apple habits and industry trends.
