Angry Birds series maintains dominance

The Associated Press has begun tracking weekly iOS App Store sales, according to an announcement. Previously the wire agency had only been tracking music sold through iTunes. Top-ten categories are divided into free and paid iPhone apps, with matching charts for the iPad.

The top paid iPhone app for first week -- ending on the 19th in the AP's schedule -- is SPY mouse, published by Electronic Arts. Rovio's Angry Birds series continues to hold sway over rankings though, occupying 2nd, 3rd and 8th places. The leading free iPhone app is Gameloft's racer Asphalt 6: Adrenaline.

A very different story emerges in the iPad charts, where Apple holds the top spot in both cases. The most popular free app is iBooks, whereas the bestselling paid app is Pages. In the paid list Apple also occupies 2nd and 5th places with Keynote and Numbers, respectively. Some long-time bestsellers back on this week's iPad lists include Weather+, Documents to Go, Netflix and Kindle.
