Rumors of classic/shuffle iPods' deaths premature

Last week, rumors were flying that Apple planned to discontinue the iPod shuffle and iPod classic. The axe was supposed to fall at today's big media event. That did not happen, and both iPods continue to be part of Apple's iPod lineup.

Neither comes with the updates that were given to the iPod touch and nano. The iPod shuffle continues to cost $49 for 2GB, while the iPod classic costs $249 for 160GB and didn't get a rumored 220GB update.

The two are typically the slower selling models in Apple's lineup but also fill important holes in the lineup. At its price, the shuffle is much less expensive than the iPod nano and works for those who are worried about cold hands or screen damage. The iPod classic is still the only iPod or iOS device that can hold more than 64GB of content. Apple could theoretically have developed a 128GB iPod touch but would have had to raise the price even as it fell short.
