iOS 5.1 beta disables settings shortcuts

Feature may go back to being jailbreak-only

The iOS 5.1 beta disables the ability to use homescreen shortcuts to jump to system settings, reports say. The unexpected feature was introduced with iOS 5, and is enabled by adding specially-formatted web links to a device's homescreen. Users can, for instance, jump directly to Bluetooth control without having to navigate through submenus in the Settings app.

Before the feature was discovered, the only way of enabling quick access to system settings was through jailbreaking. Why Apple would disable the option is unclear, but it could be considered a security vulnerability, or at least unsupported. Since iOS 5.1 has only just begun beta testing the change could also be reversed later on.

    Boooooo!

Oh come on, Apple. That's just lame. If you'd instead offer us a better method to get to the settings, something along the way SBSettings does it, that would be something worthy of an .1 update.

    No fair

The shortcuts are actually a great feature, I wish they showed up in the Notifications Center so I could easily flip WiFi on and off.

    Bad Apple

This feature helps me save time and clicks when i am in a rush. Especially with my BT. I have my iPhone on a mount while driving for navigation and use a BT adapter which sometimes needs pairing or I need to switch on the BT on my phone.

Bad Bad Bad Apple. don't give me a reason to give up on you and look at the evil droid.

    Flip apps

Apple needs to give us a set of flip apps. Activate them once, and something like Bluetooth turns on. Do it again, and it turns off. And the app icon could display the state.

    Bummer.

I just added the bluetooth shortcut. I hope they reenable that functionality before release. Though it isn't all THAT difficult to change the settings, this is an improvement to "click-swipe-authenticate-click-scroll-click-click-click". Eliminating 2 clicks and a scroll is progress toward the elegance category.
