Gmail on iOS gets first major update

Google chose Wednesday to deliver its first major update to Gmail on iOS (App Store. The new version lets users set a mobile-only signature as well as a stock vacation response. On iOS 5, users get a new custom sound for notifications.

Other changes bring improvements to nested labels as well as "numerous" smaller interface adjustments and bug fixes. The app still needs iOS 4 or later to work.

The update is the first significant one of its kind for the Gmail app since it returned to the App Store. Google has had a problematic history with the app and had to pull it almost immediately after its initial launch due to a major notifications bug.
