Also gains more patterns, instruments
IK Multimedia has launched a major update of SampleTank, its iOS-based music performance app. The title is now universal, with native interfaces for both the iPad and the iPhone/iPod touch. Perhaps the most important addition though is that of a four-track MIDI recorder, which can be used to record layers for songs or complete music. The recorder includes looping and quantizing functions, and finished work can be exported to an audio file.
A new beatmaking interface sports user-assignable pads. IK has also increased number of bundled instruments in the paid app to 136, and doubled the total instruments available to over 500; over 1,000 patterns are accessible. The update lastly adds support all iOS device docks, instead of just a selection.
IK is selling the regular version of SampleTank for $20. Instrument packs cost $5 or $10 apiece, though, or $40 for the entire collection. The free app incorporates just eight instruments by default, but can be upgraded to the full version via in-app purchase.
