Airtight app allows AirPlay feature on Google TV

App developer Airtight has just released an Android app ($0.99, Android Market) that lets Google TV hardware devices use AirPlay to stream movies and photos from iPhones, iPod touch, and iPad devices to their HDTVs. The currently beta-stage app lets a Logitech Revue or Sony device get some of the features that would normally need an Apple TV. Some features aren't yet supported, including AirPlay mirroring, music, and the streaming of copy-protected movies.

The app isn't sanctioned by Apple, and it therefore remains to be seen whether Apple will make any changes to its own software or perhaps even takes legal action to stop Airtight from using AirPlay to send content to Android. Earlier apps so far haven't been curbed.

AirPlay is intended as a competitive advantage for Apple that lets users easily share media to other parts of its ecosystem. It stands as one of the few formats of the kind that's intended to be proprietary, contrasting with the more universal but more complex DLNA and UPnP found on most other devices.

    Why bother?

You can get an Apple TV instead and not only stream videos and audio but also apps and games.

Maybe people want to be able to stream videos/audio that isn't just limited to the few formats the Apple wants you to use.
